Happy Hallows

"Happy Halloween" Originally uploaded by jhary.

Well, if I don't have a costume in RL, at least I have one on Second Life. This body and skin are collectively called "Free Roswell," and it's available from the guys at Alien Planet. Maybe I'll keep it on for a few days...

New (Temporary) Diggs

New (Temporary) Diggs Originally uploaded by jhary.

I was granted a temporary residence on Eduisland II today. Here's a shot of me setting up my area. Do you think I need some furniture? That's Eduisland II in back of me: yes that appears to be an active volcano in back of me. Many thanks to KJ Hax and Laelia Laval from SLolar Central for giving me a space on Second Life.

Gothing Out

Having some fun shopping in Second Life. This is the first generation of my new cyberpunk look. Thanks for the help, Alexa.

I also found a cool blog right here on Blogger that deals with Second Life: Fashion Victim. I ran into some of Stephanie Misfit's photos on Flickr, and her stream led me to the blog. Not only is it imaginative and fun, but the information is useful for negotiating SL — or at least making your avatar look good. Thanks, Stephanie and friends.

Second Life

Jhary JathoI've been playing with Second Life.

Yeah, I know. But, it has potential for education, and honestly, I'm enjoying it. I've been on for a year yesterday, but have only recently started to learn in earnest. I've met some very helpful people and have run into some old friends. It's like a MOO with graphics. I have customized my avatar a bit, but I have not tried to build anything yet. Small moves. I'm impressed with all the citizens who are willing to help. I've even had people give me money to buy something decent to wear! Cool.

Well, if you're on, say hi to Jhary Jatho.

Mailer Hospitalized Again

Some recent news about Norman Mailer's continuing health problems. Get well soon.

RoopleTheme

I found some excellent Drupal themes from RoopleTheme. I used one for the Mailer Society's site and one for The Mailer Review site. Thanks for the professional work, guys. While the themes are excellent as is, I know I'll be tweaking them a little bit.

Satan and Tech

The L.A. Times posted a review of Norman Mailer's new book with Mike Lennon, On God: An Uncommon Conversation:

Mailer's new book, "On God: An Uncommon Conversation," may best be read in such a context -- although, in truth, it's probably best not read at all. Framed as a series of Socratic dialogues between Mailer and his friend and literary executor Michael Lennon, it's an empty effort, full of sophistry.

I think they liked it. My copy's on-order, and I'm looking forward to it. This bit from the review seems very Mailer to me:
Throughout the book, he confuses God with religion and views both exclusively through a Christian/Catholic filter, as if this were the only available lens. Rather than discuss the spirit, he ruminates on the saints and purgatory, blaming Satan for technology and espousing a half-hearted belief in reincarnation because "God hates to give up on an interesting artistic possibility."

Satan and technology, together again. Like I said: I can't wait to read it.

Mailer in SP Times

Norman Mailer and The Mailer Review are featured in today's St. Pete Times:

At 84, prolific author Norman Mailer shows no quit. The Mailer Review, a new literary journal edited by a USF professor, takes a closer look at the man and his work.

They were supposed to use my photo, but didn't. The AP one is good, too.
